Why now a blog?

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

Old-school users of Feed Me Links may be wondering “why create a blog, the site’s been around since 2002.”

On the other hand, new or prospective users might look at this blog and say, “where’s all the content?”

The answer to the second question is that news about Feed Me Links is “in the links” (literally). I used to post Feed Me Links news as links on Feed Me Links, tagged with “FML news.” Those stories, you can subscribe to an RSS feed of updates (since all feed me links tags have automatic RSS feeds).

The historical reason for this is that Feed Me Links predates some of the simpler blogging platforms, and I was more interested in developing Feed Me Links than I was in blogging about it (or writing blog software). [The blog I ran on JM3.net at the time was a completely home-rolled with modern features like XSLT rendering of posts and pages, web-based posting, and encrypted email posting (even wordpress and MT don’t have this yet, to my knowledge).]

But the world has changed. So as for question 1, why blog now, the answer is: because that’s what people expect.
